After their team’s failed to advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, Dortmund Borussia midfielder Sven Bender said that he is still looking forward to meeting their long-time rivals Bayern Munich, this time in the Bundesliga.
“It would be nice if we could show them that we’re still a top team and can always surprise.” Bender said in an interview. “Everyone is looking forward to that special task. Maybe some may underestimate us and say we’re not at their best level at the moment.”
While Bayern remains at the top of the Bundesliga standings, Dortmund has a very disappointing performance, falling to the tenth place in the team rankings. However, Bender is still very optimistic that they will be able to move up the rankings ladder.
“I think we have found our strength again,” Bender enthusiastically said in the interview. “We have a good defence again and are playing successfully again. We always showed in the past that we could keep pace with them and even win.” Despite being at the bottom half of the rankings, Jurgen Klopp’s crew has managed to avoid relegation.
The German midfielder cites the return of former teammates Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski as one of the factors that will greatly help them in their upcoming match against Bayern on April 4. “I have contact with Mario, we’re texting sometimes,” he revealed. “But ahead of such a game there’s no more contact than usual.”
However, Bender was also cautious in saying how much of an impact this would make to the team’s overall performance. “Of course, it’s not the same situation like it was in previous years where we were really close in the standings.”
Bender is himself returning to the team after being sideline by an injury for several weeks and is excited to see action. “Since my return I made every training session and I’m in top condition. Although I need the international break to train and work every day to get the final tuning that is still missing.”
