After several months of speculations, Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira has finally broken his silence on rumors of his imminent transfer and confirmed that he is indeed leaving the team after his contract expires at the end of this season.
Khedira also denied rumors of internal conflict between him and other personalities in Real Madrid being one of the reasons behind his decision. “This is not a decision against Real, I just want to spice up my career and evolve,” the German player said in in an interview by Spanish newspaper Marca. “I love Real Madrid and it will be hard for me to leave this club.”
Khedira has come under increasing criticism from fans and observers this season, particularly during the Last of 16 round, where Madrid was nearly eliminated by Schalke. His position has also increasingly being overshadowed by Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.
The midfielder also stressed that, despite his decision, he is still very committed in giving his best performance for the team during his last few months with them. “Until the last day of my contract, I will give everything for this jersey,” he reiterated.
Rumors of Khedira’s transfer sparked anew last week after he was missing during training session, due to gastroenteritis. With the confirmation of his exit, speculations of where he could head next heightened. In an article by the Daily Mirror, sports analyst Hamish Mackay listed down several options for the coveted player, including Chelsea and Arsenal, two teams that has shown significant interest in Khedira even before the confirmation. Other possibilities according to Mackay are Paris Saint Germain, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Schalke, and Wolfsburg.
However, Khedira is quick to clarify that he still has no solid plans as to where to head next. He also said that there is no prior agreement with any other team before he announced his decision.
