Tottenham are reportedly keen on signing Everton’s Ross Barkley

Everton’s big spending this summer has given fans hope that the Toffees can enjoy an even better campaign than last season.

The fans may be happy with the signings, but one man who will be concerned by the signings will be playmaker Ross Barkley.

Two of the arrivals Davy Klaassen and of course Wayne Rooney play in Barkley’s preferred number ten role.

Barkley’s prospects of first-team football may be further damaged if the Toffees can come to a compromise with Swansea over Icelandic star Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Everton’s transfer dealings just seem to throw Barkley’s future more in doubt. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops.

Contract is expiring

The 24-year-old now has less than a year left on his current contract on Merseyside. The Toffees have offered the midfielder a new deal. However, the England international has so far refused to sign it and put his future at the club in doubt.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman previously stated that Barkley signs the new deal or he will be sold this summer. The Dutchman has recently stated that the midfielder’s future is still unclear. Barkley has shown no sign of signing a new deal with the Toffees.

Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing Barkley. However, the Toffees reported value of £50million has deterred any bid so far. Maybe the midfielder feels he that he deserves more credit, money or respect.

Has barely developed in recent years

Many Everton fans have lost patience with Ross Barkley. They may be critical of the star, but there is a reason. He has the most annoying habit of making the wrong decision in good positions. Another one of his worse traits is that he loses the ball in good positions by not getting his head up.

The midfielder has failed to live up to the hype of his early career. In his teen years, Barkley was a potential superstar, or so some people and media would have you believe.

Barkley does have natural ability, but he has failed to develop that ability. His inconsistencies have not just frustrated the fans they have also frustrated Koeman. The Dutchman attempted to get the best out of Barkley by dropping the midfielder last season.

It seemed to have worked and given him the kick up the backside he needed, as his performances temporarily improved. However, his level of consistency was still not great.

It is a shame that Barkley has struggled for consistency, as he has shown on a number of occasions he does have a good level of ability. Unfortunately, he does not show it enough to be a regular in a top Premier League team.

Maybe a move would be best for Barkley

Spurs are currently the favourites to sign the midfielder at odds of 4/6. Maybe boss Mauricio Pochettino could get something out of Barkley that Koeman and previous bosses could not.

The Argentinian boss has a history of aiding the development of young players. He could be the ideal boss to help get the best out of Barkley.

One thing that seems sure is that the midfielder will have a fight on his hands to secure first team football next season if he stays at Everton. Koeman obviously has his doubts about Barkley, as do the majority of Everton fans.

Barkley is a local lad and Evertonian’s love nothing better than a homegrown hero. However, his actions in stalling on signing a new contract and his lack of improvement have quickly turned the fans opinions against the midfielder.

It seems the midfielder’s development has stalled at Everton. Maybe a move away from Merseyside and to a different environment will be good for the player, as at the moment Barkley’s once promising career is in limbo.

Will Ross Barkley leave Everton this summer?
