New York Red Bulls took advantage of home ground and fans to eliminate the defending MLS cup champions from 2014 MLS cup playoffs. Sporting Kansasa conceded to a 2-1 loss after being out-muscled by their opponents.
The match held at Red Bull Arena on Thursday night attracted a considerable number of fans from both sides. The top scorers in the league this season added to their record with Bradley Wright Phillips and Dom Dwyer finding the back of the net in the second half.
All goals came in the second half after an interesting first half that ended to a 0-0 draw. The winning goal came from Wright Phillips header in the 90th minute which helped the team advance to MLS cup playoffs for the 1st time since 2011.
After advancing to the Eastern conference semifinals, Red Bulls are expected to play against Atlanta cup rivals, DC United both at home and away starting from Sunday.
The match on Thursday was a return match from the previous one played on Sunday where New York also won 2-0 against Kansasa. Red Bulls included their star, Thierry Henry who missed their previous clash on Sunday due to a double Achilles injury.
Matt Besler, sporting defender also featured in the match after suffering from hamstring and thigh problems in recent months.
