EPL teams are made up of a maximum 25 squad members, but the new Manchester United chief wants 3 lesser. And that’s possibly in the bid to cut the cost as Pogba’s pursuit goes on. The Red Devils want to re-sign the player they let go for free in 2012 and are ready to pay as much as £100million for his signature. The Juventus and France international midfielder was let off the hook by Sir Alex Ferguson after the then 19-year-old complained of his lack of game time and a need to move on in order to develop his career. Now 23, the star is the most-sought after footballer in the world, and he has attracted Barcelona, PSG, Chelsea and Manchester City. Real Madrid and the Old Trafford outfit are the only clubs going head-to-head for his signature at the moment, but the La Liga giants aren’t ready to spend that much on him even though they’re said to be his preferred destination.
Mourinho was armed with only £200million transfer funds, and he has already spent part to acquire the services of Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived for free. The Portuguese already hinted at a 4th signing during his unveiling, and it will most likely be Paul Pogba. He considers some of the current squad surplus to requirements and wants to prune the list down to 21 prior to Pogba’s arrival. LVG made use of a lot of his squad members out of position last season and that wouldn’t be happening under Jose often. It was a disappointing season for the club as they finished outside top 3, with a lot of the players performing way below expectations all season-long. A couple of them are set to face the axe given the new administration at the helm of things.
With the return of Luke Shaw from a long-term injury and the acquisition of Bailly from Villareal, the futures of Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind at the Theater of Dreams have been in doubt. Blind was made a makeshift defender last season and despite putting up an impressive performance, Jose isn’t content with having him at the centre of his defence due to his physique. Full-back, Rojo had far from an impressive season last term and will promptly be replaced with the returning Shaw once the new season begins.
The midfield quartet of Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj are also facing the risk of being shown the exit door with Mkhitaryan and Pogba also likely to arrive. Mata’s future was always going to unclear since it was Mourinho that sanctioned his sales at Chelsea due to his style of play, and with no changes having happened yet, the Spaniard won’t be in the new coach’s plans. An Everton sale is said to be in the offing, while PSG are said to be targeting Germany international, Schweinsteiger. A combination of injuries and lack of adaptation to the EPL style of football has made the 31-year-old a dispensable player in the United ranks. Schneiderlin is also being tipped with a reunion with Koeman at Everton after his failure to break into United’s starting 11 since his transfer from Southampton. Januzaj is being tipped with another loan exit after failing to live up to expectations.
