Young winger Memphis Depay says that Manchester United is “an absolute dream club” after his transfer to the team from PSV Eindhoven has been formalized.
“For me, Manchester United is an absolute dream club, so I didn’t need any convincing of the guys who already play at Manchester United,’ Depay remarked when asked about his thoughts on his imminent move to the Red Devils. “They told me only positive things, though.”
The transfer was earlier announced by PSV sporting director Marcel Brands, who said that that his team was “proud of the transfer”. Brands also praised the contributions Depay had made for the team, recalling the 21-year old player’s early days with the PSV youth team. The director added that, while they might be losing a talented player, the squad is happy about Depay getting the opportunity. The winger was instrumental in PSV winning the Dutch Eredivise title this year.
Manchester also confirmed the deal through a statement they released on the club’s website. The team said that the transfer would be completed after Depay undergoes a medical in June. United has been eyeing the young player in the last few months in an effort to bolster their offense. Old Trafford beat Liverpool, who also had a long standing interest in the player, in the race to sign him up.
Neither of the two teams confirmed the exact cost of the deal, but Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf claimed it to be around €30 million.
The move will bring Depay back with Louis van Gaal, who was his coach in the Netherlands national team that suited up for last year’s World Cup, where they finished third. Depay said that being given a chance to work with van Gaal again is “a big bonus”. The winger is Unikted’s first major signing this summer and expected to help Angel Di Maria, Juan Mata, and Ashley Young in the frontlines.
