In another scene we are all already used to, Brendan Rodger’s rearguard watched helplessly as a dazzling Riyad Mahrez in front of 1, 2, 3 of them drove an unstoppable curly shot into the Celtic’s top corner. The Algeria international helped put the EPL champions into the lead against the Scottish side in a friendly on Saturday, and it is because of such wondrous displays Arsenal are on the heels of the 25-year-old. Utter brilliance and bag of enormous talents and skills; this is Riyad Mahrez.
After leading a bunch of low-cost players to title glory last season, it was a known certainty that the big clubs will plan to make a swoop on him this summer. And recent reports claim Arsenal are nearing agreeing a deal that will see the winger arrive at the Emirates soon. If or when he does, what will he bring to the table as Wenger makes another attempt to lead his side to title glory for the 13th time of trying?
In 37 league appearances for the Foxes last term, the former Le Havre star notched up an impressive 17 strikes; one more than the league tally of Arsenal’s leading scorer, Olivier Giroud. If there is one thing to happen for sure in the eventuality of an Arsenal arrival, it is that Mahrez will definitely come bearing goals.
And he will rival Ozil for the assists king position too. With 11 assists and 67 created chances last season, Mahrez had a hand, or leg as it were in every 1 out of 3 Leicester goals. Goals, important ones make winning the league possible, and the Algerian sure knows how to put important ones at the back of the net.
Given Arsenal’s famous 3-behind-the-striker formation, seeing a 3-man combination of Sanchez, Ozil and Mahrez in the attacking midfield position will drive constant fears into opposition defences. The trio is known for its ability to constantly drive forward and keep hold of the ball for as long as it wants, before creating a defence-spitting pass that will very much likely lead to a goal.
Adding Mahrez might be what just Wenger needs to end his coaching career on a high as the chances of landing that title will definitely increase with the PFA player in his ranks. His constant dribbles and runs make him an upgraded and always-fit version of Sanchez on the other wing, and that will see more chances get created every now and then. Even an average Giroud has a chance to finally hit that 20-goal mark with Mahrez behind him.
Popular to contrary belief that a striker is what Arsenal really need, it could be that Mahrez is actually the missing piece in the squad’s puzzle, and it will do the North London side a lot of good if he arrives. Already a fan of entertaining football, he perfectly is in the mould of what the club’s style of play is, and both are fit for one other. Are we about to experience a match made in heaven between the player and the club? Only time will tell.
