Soccer is one of the world’s biggest games ever invented. In Europe, soccer is commonly known as football. The game is mainly competitive. and it is played by a team of 11 on each side plus a goalkeeper.

The game is a beautiful sport that has drawn many fans. Each player has their role, and they have to work as a team to score on their opponent. A goal is when you kick the ball through the goal post of your opponents. The team with the most scores wins.


A full team comprises of 11 players aside. Two goalkeepers from each team prevent the other players from scoring. Each team has to defend their half from their opponents.

Therefore, each team must have a defender who works near the goal post. The striker is also another vital part of the team.

The ball is passed to them by other players to get them to score. The players must work together to ensure they don’t get scored on by the other team.

The Game

The game lasts for 90 minutes. There is a 15 minutes break in between the two sessions. The first half goes for 45 minutes before the halftime and then 45 minutes after the halftime.

The games may have extra time added before the match is concluded. The team that scores the most goals gets to win the game.

For a game to be successful, players have to work together. There are some rules that they also have to follow.

For instance, you must not touch the ball with your hand when playing unless you are throwing to your opponent. The ball also needs to be inside the play area all the time.

How to Play the Game

To be able to play this game successfully, you must gain some valuable skills. Soccer is an array of skills.

The first skill you need is to learn how to kick the ball. Kicking the ball is an essential skill that a soccer player must possess.

A good player should be able to handle the ball in any direction. Learning how to kick with both feet without falling over is also a skill.

Sometimes a pass is critical, and this skill is necessary for a good player. Practice kicking a stationary ball as much as possible.


Dribbling is a skill that involves controlling the ball with your feet while running with it. A good player has to learn how to dribble when passing the ball to other players from your team.

If you have poor passing and dribbling skills, you can cost your side when your opponents possess the ball. The players are supposed to rehearse often to master the skills to improve their chances of winning.

A good player who can dribble can be able to make great passes all through the field and finally to the striker. Dribbling makes up for the best part of the game.


You need to learn how to serve/throw-in the ball. When the ball gets out of the pitch, a player must throw the ball to other players. The throw must be made by the opposing team that did not kick the ball outside the field.

Many times, touching the football is not allowed for players in the field once the match kicks off. A good throw allows your teammates to possess the ball and eventually score.


A goalkeeper is a player who holds the fort while ensuring the ball does not go into the goal post. The goalkeeper must have excellent skills like predicting what side the ball will pass.

The keeper also has to give the shot to the best dribbler in the field who will be able to take it to the opponent’s side.

The goalkeeper also must be able to perform high kicks that can cut across the whole football pitch. A good goalkeeper must work to protect their goal post by all means. They must also learn to avoid serious mistakes that can cost their team. Such as leaving their goal post unguarded.

A part that would suit you best is a place where you can freely execute your plans and show off your special skills. Being outstanding in soccer requires endless practice to hone the skills.

What other Skills do you need in the Field?

  • Running

Football is all about your ability to chase the ball for the whole 90 minutes. You need to practice by playing a full-time game.

You can also do running exercises that will give you the stamina to be able to withstand all the running.

The time spent in the field is a lot. All this time, you will not have a minute to rest unless you are injured and taken out of the area. Each player is equally engaged in the field throughout.

  • Passing Skills

For you to give the ball, you must have a great eye that spots the best player to receive the ball.

A wrong pass can hand over the ball to your opponents. Great eye for the players who can take the shot requires you to be keen.

A good player must be cautious and mindful of his teammates when passing the ball. Quick response is also valuable as many times; your opponents will be waiting to take the shot from your possession. Practice will help you attain this skill.

Game Rules

Some rules must be followed while playing the game. You cannot play the game unless you know all the rules.

If you are serious about playing football professionally, you have to be able to adhere to the set regulations. For instance, there are times that a player can be disqualified from a match.

Such a situation occurs when one breaks the rules such as physically attacking their opponents. The game must be won fair and square without one team being attacked by the other. Here are some football rules that you should understand.

  • Goal Kicks and corner Kicks

Goal kicks occur as a way of restarting play. The corner kicks are awarded when the ball goes over the goal post, and the defending team’s player was the last one to touch the ball.

Corner kicks are made at the corner near the goal while goal kicks happen at the target. As a player, you need to understand each one of these to avoid mishaps.

As a defender, your best option may be to always avoid corner kick because it may also give your opponents a chance to score. The keeper is the only one allow to take a goal kick. Players are usually the ones that take the corner kicks.

  • Off-Side

The rule ensures that the opponents do not camp at your goal waiting for the ball. The law provides that any of the 11 players should not be ahead of the ball in the opponents’ side while their teammate is touching the ball thus an offside.

They must also be closer to the opponents’ goal line than the last two defenders. The goalkeeper is a defender but is exempted from the rule. The rule may disqualify a goal if broken thus it is important to keep this in mind.

  • Fouls

A foul is committed when a player performs an act that may hinder the game. Some fouls are like pulling your opponent’s shirt. The referee can award the opponent with a free-kick.

A free kick is done 11 yards from the goal post. The referee marks an area before the kick.

While the ball is stationary, the keeper cannot move their feet off the goal line. After the kick, any other player can touch the ball.

Misconduct is committed when a player makes a bigger foul. For instance, attacking the referee is misconduct. The misconduct may lead to disciplinary action.

  • Direct and indirect Free kick

A player may get a free-kick when a foul occurs within the 18-yard goal area. Another player must touch an indirect free-kick before it counts as a score.

The free kick is measured, and it is shot directly to the goalkeeper by an opposing player. Differentiating the two kicks is useful for every football player or fan.

  • Throw-ins

You must be able to do a throw correctly. When any of the playing sides kick the ball out of the two sidelines, the referee must order a throw.

There is a set procedure for all throw-ins. The player is supposed to have both their feet at the point where the ball exited.

They must then put the ball behind their head and throw the ball with both their hands.

A player must release the ball in an above the head position. Breaking any of the rules can disqualify the throw-ins.

  • Players

Each player has a role in the field. We have midfielders, strikers and defenders on the field. The midfielders are in the midfield position ready to attack the ball.

The strikers receive the ball from midfielders and shoot ready to score. The defenders protect their goalpost from their opponents.

Every player must know their position to avoid discord and for the game to flow freely. Each side is given their half of the pitch while they change sides after halftime.

  • Kick- Off

The game starts when one of the players kicks the ball. The referee tosses a coin for the two players, and the side that wins gets to hit the ball first.

After the ball is kicked, each team is allowed to cross from any side of the halves. Before kickoff, each team must be in their rightful position on their side of the pitch.

  • Yellow card

A player gets a yellow card when they break serious rules. The card is lifted in the air when a referee deems it appropriate to warn a player.

They may get a warning when they create a foul to prevent an opponent from scoring. The referee can also award the card when any of the following happens

  1. Playing without care for an opponent leading to an injury
  2. Celebrating too much
  3. removing clothes after scoring
  4. Not restarting in time or ignoring the free kick marked area
  • Red card

You can get a red card when you continually break the rules. The red card sends a player off the field, and another player may not replace them. The player can be sent off if they receive more than two yellow cards in a single game.

The red card is shown when a player is violent and thus compromising on the safety of their opponents. You can also get a red card for spitting on another player or attacking the referee.
