Arsenal fans shouldn’t expect much signings this summer, and that definitely isn’t a new thing to supporters of the North London side. Wenger remains an astute businessman this summer, but no denying that the Frenchman has tried to land another big gun striker ahead of next season. However, he has met a brickwall in his latest 2 attempts (blame Jose Mourinho?). First it was with Jamie Vardy and of recent, Lyon striker, Lacazette. With the duo failing to agree to a move, rumors have it that the club are keeping a tab on Toulouse hitman, Ben Yedder. The 25-year-old has been in great form for the Ligue 1 side for the past 4 seasons, with only Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the aforementioned Lyon striker the players to have scored more than him within that time frame. And despite yet to earn a national team callup, Yedder has attracted Sevilla, West Ham, Leicester City and Tottenham, with the 4 sides hoping to land him this summer. Arsenal however remain favorite. It is believed that Wenger desperately wants to sign another striker to rival Giroud despite landing Japanese forward Takuma Asano last month. Welbeck will also be out until next year, and the attacking department will have to boast of quality options if the club is to have any chance of challenging for the title, especially given the rate of transfer activities the other top sides are conducting.
An additional leg could also be arriving to bolster the club’s midfield options, with Spanish outlet, Deporte Valenciano reporting that Besiktas midfielder, Oguzhan Ozyakup is on the verge of signing for the side. The 23-year-old Turkey international passed through the Gunners youth setup before returning home. Last season was a sort of breakthrough term for him as he helped Besiktas to a Super Lig title with 9 goals and 7 assists in 31 appearances. Having lost Andre Gomes to Barcelona, Valencia see him as the perfect replacement for the Euros 2016 winner, while Manchester United also are keeping a tab on him. The Turkish giants are aware they won’t be able to hold on to the talented midfielder for long, and are willing to let him go for £17million this summer.
Following Per Mertesacker’s knee injury during the game against Lens last Friday, Wenger is in search of a quality defender as the ex Germany international is set to miss over 2 months of action. Plaza Deportiva claim his countryman and fellow World Cup winner, Shkodran Mustafi could come in as a replacement and competition following Arsenal’s enquiry as per his availability for a summer transfer. Given the La Liga side’s woeful outing last term and a lack of European campaign next season, the central defender will likely leave and a move to London could come on the cards soon. The former Everton defender made 30 appearances for Valencia last time out, finding the back of the net twice. He also made the cut for the Germany squad that made it to the European Championships semifinals last month. With 3 more seasons left on his current contract, Mustafi has a £42million buyout clause, and it remains to be seen if the hardly-spending Arsenal will want to activate such huge amount. A defender is now of priority to the club as they are now left with Gabriel, Holding and Chambers as the only options to pair Laurent Koscielny in central defence for the beginning of next season.
