As the European football season nears its close, talks of player movement have become a hot topic, with Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel being one of them. However, the center-back says that there will no player transfers involving him this summer.
“I am not leaving anywhere,” Skrtel stressed during an interview. “Not to Wolfsburg nor to Naples.” Reports have earlier claimed that Bundesliga’s Wolfsburg and Serie A’s Napoli have been showing interest in getting the services of the 30-year old player. However, there are no confirmation yet as to whether these two teams will actually present offers.
Skrtel also said that he is currently in discussion with the Reds for a new deal after his current contract ends, which is only 14 months away. His agent Karol Csonto backed up the statement. “The only offer which is lying on Martin Skrtel’s table right now is the extension of his contract from Liverpool. We have been working on the details, and we will be finalising it soon,” Csonto asserted.
However, Skrtel admitted that leaving Anfield did cross his mind in 2013, just a year after he came into the Liverpool side. He said that Napoli presented an offer during the summer of that year, which the defender said he nearly considered after losing his place to james Carragher. He eventually decided against it after discussions with the team, where he became an essential part of the defensive force.
In other news, Liverpool is expected to make significant efforts towards next season after suffering some setbacks this year, the biggest of which is their surprise 2-1 loss to Aston Villa in the FA Cup a few days back. The Reds are said to be gunning to secure a slot in next year’s Champions League. In the player side, manager Brendan Rodgers is expected to announce who will be replacing Steven Gerrard as squad captain after the latter moves to the MLS this summer.
