Despite them losing 3-2 to Bayern Munich in the second leg of their semis match, Barcelona advances to the finals of the Champions League.
Bayern came in aggressively from the opening, with them bent on overturning their 3-0 loss in the first leg. Just seven minutes in, the Bavarians opened scoring after Medhi Benatia was left free to sink in a goal from a setup by Xabi Alonso. However, Neymar masterfully seized an equaliser in the 15th minute, coming up from a good setup by Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. The goal put pressure on Bayern, as they now needed to score another four goals if they hope to grab a finals seat.
The Bavarian’s hopes were further dashed when Suarez once again got the ball to Neymar, with the latter scoring his second goal of the night. Even being down 2-1, manager Pep Guardiola’s men remained composed and were rewarded with a leveler in the 59th minute, thanks to Robert Lewandowski .
Picking up from the momentum, Bayern pressed on to score their third for the night, courtesy of Thomas Muller. Barcelona tried to grab a draw in the endgame, but could not convert. However, they still head to the finals with a 5-3 aggregate.
Nevertheless, Bayern came off the match with a morale booster after snapping their four-game lissing streak.
For Barcelona, the result came in sweet, as they get to step 0nto the Champions League finas stage once again after winning in the 2011 edition. Barca manager Luis Enriquez also admitted that he is now excited with the possibility of grabbing a treble for this season. “Our sensations are very positive. In general, this is a marvellous position to be in — we need just one win in each of the three competitions to win each one.”
Barcelona currently just a win away from snagging the La Liga title, with two games still waiting. They are also set to meet Atletico Bilbao for the Copa del Rey final on May 30.
